I-SCMA Past President, Carroll Quinn

I-SCMA Past President Carroll Quinn passed away September 2, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.  Carroll had served as I-SCMA president in 2002-2003.

After Carroll graduated from Villanova University, his career eventually moved into the newspaper business at the Baltimore Sun and Chicago Sun-Times before landing at the Tribune-Review, where he worked from 1992 to 2004.  Carroll’s charge was increasing home delivery of the Pittsburgh edition in the mid to late 1990s before ultimately becoming responsible for circulation and production company-wide.  During his oversight the Tribune Review saw it’s Sunday circulation almost double from 85,379 on the Audit Bureau of Circulations (now AAM) annual audit ending March 31, 1992 report to 165,755 on the March 2005 ending audit.

Carroll had an infectious personality that inspired those around him. Carroll’s leadership and friendship extended well past the Tribune Review as members of the ISCMA community remember Carroll.

“Carrol was a class act and his big personality made him fun to be around. Great guy who thoroughly enjoyed life to the fullest. RIP Carroll and may your family find comfort in their memories of good times with you.” Bill McMahon, 2012-2013

“I could not believe when I saw this news and was very shocked to say the least. When Carroll was in a position to do so, he chose me to go through the chairs of I-SCMA. If he had not done that, I would not be on this past president’s list. My last visit with Carroll was in Pittsburgh two years ago at the I-SCMA conference. Prayers for the family as this has to be so hard on them. What a guy!” Joe O’Toole, President 2006-2007

“Sad news indeed.  Carroll and I worked together when he first joined The Baltimore Sun.  Carroll was assigned to me for training in his role as Zone Manager and we became friends and colleagues.  He actually recruited me for the position in Pittsburgh/Greenville where it was a fast and furious time in the circulation department! Carroll was always the life and times of the party and will be missed.  I wish his family deepest condolences during this difficult time.” Mike Kane, President 2013-2014

“He kept the Trib actively involved with I-SCMA and willing to share ideas.” Keith Kirchner, President 2004-2005

“So sorry to hear the news of Carroll’s passing. I believe he was the president when I joined I-SCMA. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.” Bridget Vilenica, President 2010-2011

“Carroll was easy to work with.  He hired the right people for the job and then let them do it.  No micromanaging from Carroll.  He expected you to do your part to keep operations moving forward and you did it out of mutual respect.  I worked with Carroll at the Pittsburgh Trib from 1998 until he moved on. He was a bright light in a sometimes dismal profession.”  Jerry Rooney, Operations Manager – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
