Spotlight on I-SCMA member and Regional Director representing the District of Columbia, John Mandish, of The Washington Post.

Tell us a little about your current position, how long you have been in the business, and the positions you have held.

I work for the Washington Post and currently hold the position of Division Manager for the District of Columbia, Maryland, and regional areas to the North and East.

I started in the newspaper business as a Washington Post carrier when I was 15 years old delivering the route where I lived. Back in those days, you not only delivered the paper to your customers, you also collected subscriber payments at the door. That really allowed me to develop personal relationships with my customers. I did this through high school and college.

After graduating from the University of Maryland, I became a distributor for The Washington Post in Hyattsville, Maryland. I have spent my entire career here at the Post and have worked with some incredible people. I have also worked at the Post as a zone manager and assistant plant manager.

What do you enjoy most about your current position?

I love working with the people here at The Post and enjoy the relationships developed over many years. Many of the carriers, agents and management staff have been here for several years and are a talented, dedicated group. I like to refer to them as my work family.

What do you find to be the most challenging in this business?

It is becoming increasingly difficult to make the economics work with fewer and fewer folks receiving the printed paper, but all in our industry keep pushing. Here at The Post, we do our best every day to stay ahead of our ever-changing business model.

What is your go-to activity when you are not working?

I love being with my family, friends and being outside any chance I get. I also love spending time at our family cabin in Northern NY and playing ice hockey.

What is something about you that others might be surprised to learn?

My wife, Mary and I have raised 4 incredible men.  2 have graduated from the United States Naval Academy and 1 is currently enrolled there.  Our youngest is currently at Temple University in Army ROTC.  Yes, it is a house divided!  Go Navy, Go Army!

Thank you, John, for sharing your story with us!
