Spotlight on I-SCMA Regional Director of Pennsylvania and Audience Sales Manager, Janelle Ellis, of The Times-Tribune.

Tell us a little about your current position, how long you have been in the business, and the positions you have held.

I am the Audience Sales Manager for four newspapers within the News Media Group:  The Times-Tribune, The Citizens’ Voice, The Standard Speaker, and The Republican Herald. I am responsible for attracting new and former subscribers by selling digital and home delivery subscriptions. I design multiple email campaigns, promotions, postcards, and marketing materials to help better target the audience we are trying to reach. I am also a part of our marketing committee where we plan and manage contests and giveaways that we hold every month. I have been in the newspaper industry for 8 years total.   My first 3 years of experience working in the newspaper industry was fresh out of college where I worked for a company that provided graphic design support for newspaper ads. I was a Lead Graphic Artist who was responsible for oversight and management of 6 Midwestern newspapers working with their sales representatives on designing efficient design layouts for their clients.

What do you enjoy most about your current position?

I truly love getting to work with a great team of co-workers who have taught me a lot during my time so far within the industry and being able to work together on providing the best service for our subscribers.

What do you feel are the biggest challenges facing our industry today?

I find one of the many challenges within the industry is trying to reach the younger demographic to subscribe. It’s quite a challenge when most rely on social media platforms for a source of news. Hopefully, we can slowly gain traction in marketing the value of a digital subscription and the in-depth quality of the newspaper content.

What is your go-to activity when not working?

I enjoy spending time with my family and making memories with my daughter. I love going to theme parks to ride all of the crazy roller coasters, taking trips to the shore to relax and unwind, and as most people already know I am a huge Disney fanatic and love all things Disney!

What is something about you that others might be surprised to learn?

My daughter Juliana was born prematurely and was only 2.3 oz. She spent the first 3 months in the NICU. She is now 17 months and watching her grow has been amazing to watch to see how far she has come over time! She is the strongest, bravest little girl I know and a true inspiration to me and teaches me to always be thankful each and every day.

Thanks, Janelle, for sharing your story with I-SCMA!
