Betty J. Way Carrier of the Year Award – October 13, 2022
Each year, I-SCMA recognizes the best carriers at member newspapers with the Betty J. Way Carrier of the Year Award.
The award is presented in honor of Betty J. Way, a two-time Past President, Honorary Member and recipient of the I-SCMA Achievement Award. This award exemplifies Way’s deep love and appreciation for newspaper carriers of all ages and the distinguished service they provide to their communities and customers.
In 1992, Way became the first woman president of I-SCMA. She worked at The Patriot-News for more than forty years and served as its Circulation Director for more than two decades before she retired in 2003.
Youth Category Winner
Jonathan Dubow, Jr (2.5 years) – Times News
Not only does Jonathan enjoy delivering he states it keeps him in shape and his customers are kind and motivate him to try harder. Jonathan completed his 8th grade year last spring with a 98.24 GPA and earned distinguished honors in the 3rd and 4th marking period. He also won academic math and most creative awards.

Adult Category Winner
Roberta Hebden (11 years) (30+ years route in the family) – The Times-Tribune
Roberta inherited her route form her mother who passed. Roberta often helped her mother, so that she was not alone. Roberta takes this caring inspiration to her customers by providing top service and going beyond just dropping a newspaper on the porch she places it where her elderly customers find ease at retrieving. Roberta is also an avid volunteer.

Maria Griffith – The Patriot-News
Maria’s mom use to cut Betty J Way’s hair at her shop on Old Jonestown Rd. called Mary’s beauty solon. Maria has been delivering since 1996. Her reason for continuing as a carrier she states is – My customers depend on me and I like to provide the type of service that makes a difference to them. Maria delivers to an elderly neighborhood and delivers the newspaper to places the customer can reach with ease because of their mobility issues. She is an active community advocate participating in many annual events.

Beverly Aniska – The Times-Tribune
Award: First place winners in each category received a plaque, $250, and an invitation to attend the I-SCMA awards lunch with a guest. First place winning carrier’s managers received a $50 reward.
