Dear Members and Associate Members On April 7th the elected officers and Directors met in Hershey to discuss the plans for our 92nd annual Conference. It was originally announced that it would be held in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
We as a group discussed the tough economic climate and how we have seen travel and training budgets go away. This type of strategy may provide modest short-term relief, but they have long-term consequences on our industry. The ideas that came out of our meeting were A) don’t have a conference in 2009, B) look at reducing our conference to two days, C) hold the conference at a more central location.
We finalized our plans for the October conference and our goal was to cut costs for the attendees and encourage more day trippers by having it at a central location. The new site for the conference will be the Radisson in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. Normally the conference would be over a 3 day period, Sunday through Tuesday evening. This year’s conference will start on Sunday afternoon and end on Tuesday mid day. The idea to shorten the conference came from our loyal advertising associates and will reduce the expense for hotel nights.
The advertisers’ set up will start at 1 pm Sunday afternoon and the display area will end on Tuesday mid day. This will eliminate the need for lodging on Tuesday evening. This will cut down on the cost for our Members, Advertisers and Associate Members. The Camp Hill location is across the river from down town Harrisburg and a central location and allows our newspaper budget the ability to send more folks as a day trip and save on lodging.
We need to work together as an organization by networking. I cannot recall a time in the newspaper business when it was more critical to meet and exchange ideas, and develop strategies.
I hope that through these changes to our conference that it will be more affordable and that your Publisher or Director will realize the benefits of having Circulators share new ideas and success stories. So mark your calendar for/on Sunday, October 11th through Tuesday, October 13th. Hope to see all of you at the conference in October.
Thanks,
Dick DeHavenPresident, I-SCMA

Despite turbulence in the newspaper industry, one thing remains strong; the spirit of camaraderie and cooperation we enjoy in I-SCMA, especially at our annual conference and regular training opportunities.
To that end, I-SCMA will gather in central Pennsylvania this fall for its 92nd annual conference on Oct. 12 and 13 at the Radisson Penn Harris Hotel & Convention Center. In an abbreviated session constructed with constrained expense budgets in mind, sessions will run for a day and a half, from Monday through the following afternoon, and one grand banquet will be held Monday evening. Regardless, the annual conference will feature all the hallmarks which have made past conferences successful, from advertiser participation starting Sunday afternoon to promotion contests for sharing ideas to information-packed learning sessions. Whether you are able to join us for one day or for the entire conference, your valuable time and budget dollars will be well spent with concrete takeaways for your publishers back home. While full details will be posted soon, you may subscribe to our email list to be notified when registration forms are available on the web site. Make your plans now to join us this fall. |
